Sketching as a Starting Point
Sketching is a crucial tool for our team in visualing early design ideas; exploring the physicality of a building and its potential whilst allowing flexibility for development. Following a client’s brief, we often produce a series of sketches to suggest the initial quality of a building. Whether it’s to outline massing, or to reveal the interior character of a future space, the clarity of a sketch enables overarching design concepts to be broken down into consumable, direct ideas. It also democatrises the early creative process – providing visual introduction as a means to jointly begin shaping the spirit of a place.
Sketch pin-up sessions offer a launchpad for dialogue, building shared ownership over design ideas from a project’s earliest stages. This means the design team, client, and the design process itself develop in tandem through a malleable process. The sketch creates an impression, builds identity, and introduces visual coherency. It constructs form without strict finality, signifying a design process marked by iterative and open exchange.
