Valentino Architects’ recently completed retrofit project, Old Theatre Townhouse, has been featured in Domus magazine, the leading Italian architectural journal established in 1928 by architect Gio Ponti.

The townhouse is located on Old Theatre Street in Valletta, sitting directly beneath two of Valletta’s most prominent landmarks – the Carmelite dome and St Paul’s steeple. Its design creates chromatically distinct levels of living that stretch along the depth of the house, with a metal encased passenger lift uniting the levels vertically at the belly of the plan. Ascending through bands of colour, the townhouse opens up to a roof terrace at it topmost level, where a stone wrapped swimming pool sits shaded by overhead horizontal beams and planting. A minimal deck contrasts the grandeur of the nearby dome, with its reflections shifting across the pool’s surface as the day progresses.
