Farmhouse (Studios)

Set within Siġġiewi’s rural landscape, this two-storey residence reinterprets a heavily modified traditional farmhouse, drawing from earlier iterations to recover and reframe its original character.

A restoration strategy was developed through a careful discovery process, stripping back previous additions, reducing the footprint, and allowing key architectural elements to re-emerge, anchoring and influencing the new intervention.

The redesign draws inspiration from the property’s 1990s aesthetic while introducing contemporary elements. Structural elements articulate the renovated framework, while whitewashed walls enhance light quality throughout. New materials are introduced with restraint, extending a subtle dialogue with the building’s older fabric and delineating functional zones without interrupting spatial continuity, contributing to the layered narrative of preservation and renewal. The garden facades, plastered with a traditional ‘tyrolean’ plaster, differentiate between the reconstructed and original fabric.

The upper-level houses three bedrooms, with the master suite offering sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. Outdoor areas extend the home into its rural setting, forming a threshold between architecture and nature. Through carefully articulated interventions that reinterpret its past, the residence strikes a balance between restoration and transformation, resulting in a family home that is both connected to its surroundings and inherently responsive.
