A brother and sister share a corner plot – a site that will house their independent family homes within one development. Their joint brief outlined a desire to achieve parity in the property’s value, arrangement and experience, creating two equal households on one site with similar footprints and quality of space. As a response, the project’s design proposes a concept of alternate stacking and criss-crossing circulation – optmising views and space for both families whilst creating unique opportunities for communal amenities.
The villa divides into two autonomous homes, each sharing a common garage, perimeter and rooftop pool. Circulation is pulled to the back of the site, accessed via a ground floor pre-cast bridge that traverses the middle of the building, cutting through a central courtyard that sits at basement level below. Both families therefore enter their homes from the back of the development, accessing a block of stairs and dedicated lift that lead up to their separate homes,which wrap around the courtyard. Each dwelling is made up of two floor plates that sit transversely on the ground and first floor, facing one another over the central void on different levels. On the first floor, two balconies hover above the common walkway, overlooking the courtyard and providing moments of exchange for the two families as they look out onto framed views ahead. A final rooftop floor is partially shared, with two swathes of deck space sitting on either side of the central open space, united exclusively by a slender pool that extends across the entire length of the building.
