One of the world’s most popular architecture websites, Archdaily, has announced its nominations for the 2024 building of the year awards this week.
Valentino Architects’ ‘The Mill House‘ has been included in the running for the ‘Houses’ category this year. The winning entry for this category in 2023 was ‘House in Pomar do Cafezal, Portugal’ by Coletivo Levante; a home that represented a constructive model using common materials in slums, with an adequate implementation and attention to lighting and ventilation, resulting in a space with great environmental quality.
The Mill House is a new family home that skillfully links a cluster of Grade I and II Listed buildings, including a mill room dating to around the mid-to-late 16th century, with a new carefully integrated glazed walkway that shifts from reflection to translucency as the day progresses from morning to night. The walkway overlooks an outdoor courtyard that adjoins the ground floor spaces, conceived as a focal point for the design of the project, allowing the disparate spaces to communicate with the sun-soaked hearth of the house.
