dell, meaning ‘shadow’ in Maltese, is a kitchen series commissioned by SAW Ltd – a leading contract furniture manufacturer with over 30 years’ experience. dell forms part of a wider designer-led furniture collection for varied rooms within the home which includes collections by Tom Van Malderen and A Collective, appearing in the new showroom, DARI.
Conceived as a plug-and-play series of cabinets, dell includes three typical set-ups – compact, apartment and townhouse. Its ‘tool-kit’ design means this collection can be adapted to suit changing layouts, with customisation extending to surface finish. The units’ materials – particle board and laminate – are expressed as clean swathes of solid colour laminates and timber veneers. dell inverts regular cabinetry design, where doors are conventionally made to cover the edge of sheet material. Instead, edges are exposed, celebrating materials and bringing focus back to rhythm and architectural qualities.
Slender batons run up the length of the cabinets, emphasising the units’ verticality and casting shallow, rhythmic shadows across upright surfaces. They also serve as door handles, along with horizontal slender batons on drawer cabinets. These fins extend surfaces by 50mm, providing increased worktop space and depth at the kitchens’ plinth, resulting in more foot-space for manoeuvring around worktops. Colour, shadow and proportion supersede ornament, with stoic marble islands contrasting the cabinetry both tonally and texturally.
